Pilgrim’s Progress Discussion, March 27

I would venture a guess that most of us reading Bunyan together have finished Part 1 and are into Part 2 (if not, don’t worry, still lots of time to finish before the movie and the ACG on April 28th).
Aside from portions of the Bible, Bunyan’s description of crossing the River and entering into the King’s City may be the most powerful description of heaven I have ever read. It may be healthy to read it monthly, even weekly, and so ‘set our minds on things above’…

Pilgrim’s Progress Discussion, March 6

I hope at this point in your reading you’ve made it with Christian to Calvary and up Hill Difficulty (if not, no worries – still plenty of time, but spoilers lay ahead)! I love the moment when the burden rolls away down the hill into the sepluchre!

I am interested to hear your thoughts/reactions to Christian losing his scroll after having fallen asleep in the arbour on his way up Hill Difficulty…

Pilgrim’s Progress Discussion, 21 Feb 2019

We are very interested to know about your experience with this classic book. In the comments, let us know if you’ve read the book before and if so, what are were your impressions. If you’ve never read it before, what are looking to get from this book? What copy are you reading – Modern English, […]

Church Read: Pilgrim’s Progress

This week we announced an all church reading endeavor – Pilgrim’s Progress. This book has been translated into 200+ languages and, aside from the Bible, is the best selling book of all time. Why? Read along with us and find out! It is one of the very few works of fiction I (Dan W.) have read multiple times – this will be my fourth. It’s worth it every time!

Visit the blog often and leave your comments as you read with us. It will be a transformative journey!

Reflections on Daily Reading, May 22nd

I recently read the incredible story of Gideon, a judge whom God raised up to free Israel from the tyranny of the Midianites. The men of Israel rally around Gideon and he gathers a thirty-thousand man army to do battle. But that’s not going to work for God’s purposes – he wants to make sure […]

Reflection on Daily Reading, April 24th

I haven’t posted a reflection in quite some time. To be honest, I fell behind and had some catching up to do. Having finished the readings on the Law (Genesis thru Deuteronomy) I was struck by a few things that are consistent, but maybe under-noticed themes in these books.

Reflections from Daily Reading, Feb 15th

Today I was reading in Exodus 29 about the ordination of Aaron and his sons for the priesthood. The previous chapters detail at length the prescribed dress for the priests who serve in the Tabernacle. Exodus 29 outlines the laborious, costly, and frankly bloody ordination service that would last a week. At least ten animals […]

Reflections from Daily Reading, Feb 14th

Psalm 32 is a powerful reminder of the grace of confession. The psalm opens by declaring,  “Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.”  After this opening flurry of blessedness, the psalmist recounts a not-so-blessed time when his “bones were wasting away,” his “strength was dried up,” he groaned all day […]

Reflections from Daily Reading, Feb 7th

Jesus gives us a very important lesson on how to read Old Testament prophecy in Matthew 11. Jesus is teaching about the importance of John the Baptist and his role as the forerunner to the Messiah. The prophet Malachi’s words are quoted by Jesus, “This is the one about whom it is written: ‘I will […]

Reflections from Daily Reading, Feb 6th

Psalm 25 is a beautiful prayer. As we’ve been thinking about prayer recently, part of this Psalm really jumped out to me. The psalmist writes, “For the sake of your name, LORD, forgive my iniquity, though it is great.”  Asking for forgiveness is linked to God’s name, his glory. I think there are two things […]
