Our next miniseries, The Gift of Surrender, begins with Romans 12:1-8. Often, the idea of “surrender” has a negative connotation of defeat: surrender to an enemy, surrender to “the inevitable” life circumstance. However, when we surrender to God we actually find freedom, love, and even power. The hymn writer George Matheson put it this way:
Make me a captive, Lord,
And then I shall be free.
Force me to render up my sword,
And I shall conqueror be.
I sink in life’s alarms
When by myself I stand;
Imprison me within Thine arms,
And strong shall be my hand.
