Hopelessness

When you watch the news, or pray for friends, family, a situation, or the nations, do you ever feel a sense of hopelessness? Sometimes, we look around and think, “How can this situation change? What can be done here? How can evil be overcome?”

In Psalm 55, David describes being overwhelmed by stress from the betrayal of a friend and wanting to escape from from the physical danger and emotional distress.  He couldn’t just endure it and pretend it didn’t matter; nor could he make the evil go away.  When the body’s “fight or flight” response is triggered, adrenaline and cortisol kick in.  The body doesn’t distinguish well between physical and emotional danger, sometimes leaving the body on high alert and manifesting as physical health issues.  What does David do in his distress to avert hopelessness?

But I call to God, and the Lord saves me. Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice. He ransoms me unharmed from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me” (Vs. 16-18).

Let us come before God with our struggles and concerns–he is the one who protects and conquers!
